Alicia Lieberman

About Alicia

Dr Alicia F. Lieberman is the Irving B. Harris Endowed Chair in Infant Mental Health, professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and director of the Child Trauma Research Program at the University of California, San Francisco. She directs the Early Trauma Treatment Network, funded since 2001 with the mission to increase access and raise the standard of care for trauma-exposed young children and their families across the USA. She is the senior developer of Child–Parent Psychotherapy (CPP), an evidence-based treatment for traumatised children from birth to age 5, with an international reach. Her research involves treatment outcome studies in pregnancy and with traumatised young children from low-income and under-represented minority groups.

Born in Paraguay, Dr Lieberman received her professional training in Israel and the USA. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2020 Zero to Three Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2017 Whole Child Award from the Simms/Mann Institute, the 2016 René Spitz Award for Lifetime Achievement from the World Association of Infant Mental Health, and the 2016 Hero Award from the San Francisco Department of Public Health.

She is the author of The Emotional Life of the Toddler (2015, 2024) and numerous professional books and articles on pregnancy and early childhood mental health.
